UNDER 15’S PRESENTATION NEWSLETTER
MAY 2008

Hi everyone and welcome to the ‘St.Margaretsbury U15’s Presentation Evening’.
Tonight is our first evening of this type.  We hope that you, your friends and family have a great time and we look forward to seeing you on the dance floor later!

Managers review of season

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the boy’s for their efforts this year.  They have all worked very hard in my training sessions, some boys having to play in unfamiliar positions for the benefit of the team and who have done so without any quibbles!
I would also like to thank the Parent’s who have allowed myself and my helpers to get on with the job without interference and to the Dad’s who have helped to run the line.  I would also like to thank the Mum’s who have helped on the admin side.

This season started a little poorly and was due to a below standard pre-season.  Not enough boys attended the training sessions during July and August and due to the lack of players available we only managed to squeeze in one friendly before the start of the season.  This meant that our new signings never got the chance to acquaint themselves with existing players and vice versa.  I didn’t get the opportunity to see new players in different positions and formations and I also didn’t get the chance to rubberstamp my style of play on the team before the season started.

All this reflected in our results in early matches: P08 W2 D1 L5 F23 A25 Pts 07
Measure this against our next 10 games         : P10 W7 D1 L2 F30 A22 Pts 22

Finishing 5th only 3 points behind 2nd and 8 points off the top was respectable, but I wonder where we would have finished if we had started better?

To avoid making this mistake again we must have a more effective pre-season. I understand that most boys are away for 2/3 weeks during the school holidays but we cannot afford to lose boys for the whole 6 weeks as we did last year.

I have enjoyed this season immensely and I believe that the boys improved over the season. We still try to play football the right way by passing and moving and working together as a team, goals scored throughout the squad 53 spread across 12 players.
I also think this is reflected in the votes for Players of the Season, almost all of the squad got a vote.

Well done to everybody!

Mike Hollister

St Margaretsbury FC future plans

St Margaretsbury FC clearly sees that the way forward lies with the youth section of the club. Without it they cannot nurture their home grown talent!

This year the club started a Development Squad on Saturday mornings for 6-9yr olds.  This has proved to be quite successful and a sure-fire hit with the local community.  Many first team players along my own daughter help out passing on knowledge and honing their own coaching skills.

For the coming season 2008/9 the club are looking for managers for the U8's and U9's.  The U10's have already started training at the club with the potential of 2 more teams at U11's.

The U15's had a poor start to the season but finished strongly.  However we have a tough act to follow!  The U16's had a superb season by winning their league with 3 games in hand and being County Cup Champions. On going to press they had the opportunity of a treble.

The club overall is clearly moving in the right direction, which hopefully will be of benefit to our team!

Sunday 23rd September 2007
Herts FA Challenge Cup
St Margaretsbury FC 2 v Letchworth Eagles 1

This match was a 1st round cup tie between 2 equally balance sides.  St Margaretsbury applied the early pressure and was 1-0 up after 10 mins when Robbie Hoskins got free to score his first of the season. Letchworth had spells of possession and threatened with a couple of half chances but St Margaretsbury made it 2-0 when Jon Jones was first to a ball played over the top and fired into the net just before half time.  Letchworth started the 2nd half stronger and mid way through scored to make it 2-1. St. Margaretsbury had some good chances to increase their lead but didn’t take them.  Letchworth applied more pressure towards the end of the match and it was St. Margaretsbury who was pleased to hear the referee’s finale whistle with a 2-1 victory.

Next Cup game: Sunday 4th November 2007 Home -v- Barnet

Sunday 16th September 2007
MHRML Division 1
St Margaretsbury FC 3 Harlow Sports Marquis 5

The match was pretty even for the first 15 minutes with nether goalkeeper being practically busy. St Margaretsbury pushed forward and scored with a Luke Mariconda header from an in swinging corner. Both teams had further chances to add to the score but it was Harlow who scored with  a few minutes  to go before half time to make  it 1-1. In the second half Harlow was awarded a penalty after a hand ball goal line clearance during some desperate defending. The kick was converted, with Matt Burgess having no chance, to give Harlow a 2-1 lead.  St. Margaretsbury soon replied when a Toni Delle Grazie shot brought us level. Harlow scored twice more before Jon Jones ran from his once half to shoot low inside the keeper’s right hand post. However Harlow scored with a suspicion of offside and the score finish 3-5.

Sunday 9th September 2007
MHRML Division 1
Codicote 7 v St. Margaretsbury FC 4

Our first league game of the season away to Codicote got off to a very lively start.  Codicote scored early but Ollie soon equalised for us.  Further goals followed and within 15 mins Codicote were 3-1 ahead.  Our boys responded well and Toni scored coming in at the far post after good work down our left side.  Then a free kick swung in by Mike went straight though a crowded penalty area to make the score 3-3.  The St.Margaretsbury defence soaked up some strong pressure and after a quick break a fourth goal was added by substitute Jordan Kenton.  Although St. Margaretsbury had plenty of possession during the second half, we couldn’t get our passing game going.  Denis, taking charge of the team in Mike’s absence made good use of our subs, but with only two outfield subs available we seemed to tire more as the game went on.  An injury to Matt called Joe into action and he made a couple of good stops.  Codicote scored 4 more times ending a very entertaining match to claim a 7-4 victory.

Summer News

We entered two teams into the Edmonton Rangers Seven-A-Side Tournament on the 7th July.  The league stages of the competition saw each team play 5 matches.  Although both teams competed well the general standard was relatively high and neither progressed to the qualifying stages.

On the 14th July we entered two teams into the Ware Five-A-Side Tournament at Woodson Park. St Margaretsbury 'B' team started slowly losing their first two games, they got their football together for the last league game winning 5-0 with a Hat-trick from Robbie and goals from Ollie and George.

The St margaretsbury 'A' team faired better with victories in all three league games. This brought them into a crunch Quarter-Final with some of their old stable mates now playing for Broxbourne Rangers.  St. Margaretsbury got of to a good start going 1-0 up. Soon after Broxbourne Rangers equalised.  However we increased the tempo in the second half and ran out 4-1 winners, with a hat-trick from Jordon and a goal from Craig. This brought us into a semi-final against Wormley A.  Although a close game, Wormley ran out 2-0 winners and eventually went on to win the Tournament.

All our boys carried themselves well and played with good spirit in both Tournaments. A thank you goes out to the Non St. Margretsbury Boys who turned out to help us and enabled us two put out two teams.

Managers Player of the Tournament: Jordan Kenton - Scored 9 goals. A fine performance well done!
